Kate SwopeKate Swope, French horn

Kate Swope (apprentice 3) is an applied artist at Northern Illinois University where she directs the University Band and teaches brass techniques. She is a regular horn substitute for the Illinois Symphony Orchestra in Springfield and holds permanent positions with the Chicago Gargoyle Brass, the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. 

She received her bachelor's degree in music (with honors) and a master's degreec in horn performance from the University of Louisville School of Music, as well as a performer’s certificate in horn from Northern Illinois University. Kate’s primary horn teachers have included Bruce Heim and John Fairfield, with additional instruction from Tod Bowermaster of the St. Louis Symphony, Bernhard Scully of the Canadian Brass and Stephen Hanrahan of the Illinois Symphony.  She has been teaching lessons for the NIU Community School of the Arts for several years.
