Kate Swope (apprentice 3) is currently an Applied Artist at Northern Illinois University where she directs the University Band and teaches Brass Techniques for Music Education Majors. She holds regular professional positions with the Chicago Gargoyle Brass Ensemble, Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, and the Wheaton Municipal Band. She is also a regular substitute for the Illinois Symphony in Springfield, IL and is the Horn Teaching Assistant at Birch Creek Music Camp in Door County, WI. Her degrees in horn performance come from the University of Louisville (B.M./M.M.) and Northern Illinois University (Performance Certificate). In 2013, Kate received an NIU Outstanding Woman Award and was the winner of the 2013 Midwest Horn Workshop Solo Competition. In addition to playing horn, Kate recently completed her second Master’s degree in Wind Band Conducting at Northern Illinois University. She has taught private lessons since 2008.
