Service-learning Faculty Fellows

The Service-learning Faculty Fellows Program is a two-year fellowship supported by the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning (OSEEL), the Office of the Provost, and the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center (FDIDC). The program provides an opportunity for 1-2 exemplary faculty to serve as ambassadors for service-learning pedagogy at NIU.

The program is designed to accelerate the work of faculty members eager to learn how to successfully integrate academic service-learning into their curricula or to enhance current efforts already in use. The program aims to promote the interrelationship of teaching, research, and service through theory, action and reflection in response to community needs and to develop and translate academic knowledge, critical thinking, and community engagement into civic responsibility. Faculty Fellows will serve as advocates and mentors for NIU, faculty and staff providing leadership and guidance around the incorporation of service-learning pedagogy into existing or new courses.

Application Process

Interested faculty should complete the online application and submit all supporting documents to the OSEEL office in Altgeld 100 or electronically to engage@niu.edu. Please apply by 4:30pm on Friday, February 23, 2018.

The online application should only take 5-10 minutes to complete after you prepare the following ahead of starting the application:

  1. A brief personal statement (1-2 pages) that describes your interest in, experience with, and goals for incorporating service learning into your instruction. You might consider the following questions in your response (you need not answer them all).
    • Why do you want to be a Faculty Fellow?
    • How will your experience, skills and resources enhance the quality and increase the quantity of service-learning and other forms of community engaged teaching and learning at NIU?
    • How do you see the experience advancing your scholarly identity and teaching philosophy?
    • How you think service-learning can enhance your student’s academic development?
    • Describe your general idea for the workshop or presentation that you would facilitate in year two of your fellowship?
  2. Most recent curriculum vitae.
  3. Completed Service Learning Faculty Fellows agreement document.

Benefits of Participation

  • The program allows participating faculty to exchange ideas with academically diverse group and learn from the experiences of other Fellows in the program.
  • Faculty Fellows will leave the program with revised or newly created syllabus and the tools and resources needed to successfully implement or enhance service-learning pedagogy in a course.
  • Faculty Fellows will receive up to $2500 in compensation and professional development funds ($1,500 the first year and up to $1,000 the second year) over the two year commitment.
  • Faculty fellows will receive individualized support from the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning and the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center for technical assistance and course development, etc.
  • Faculty Fellows will be provided with an undergraduate teaching assistant, if desired, who will be able to assist with class facilitation and community engagement.

Expectations

Year One

  • Faculty Fellows will meet regularly with a member of the faculty fellows’ development team. There will be a total of six meetings (three in the fall 2018 and three during spring of 2019).
  • Faculty Fellows will receive $1,500 in additional pay (broken into two installments of $750) to support the incorporation or enhancement of the service-learning pedagogy into a new or existing course.
  • Faculty Fellows will be required to host at least one service-learning related faculty development in the fall semester (e.g., workshops, brown bag lunches, webinars, etc.).
  • Faculty Fellows will be required to serve as a presenter for the Service-Learning Institute at the end of their first year.
  • Faculty Fellows will promote service-learning at NIU and share ways of utilizing service-learning pedagogy.

Year Two

  • Faculty fellows will receive up to $1,000 as a contribution toward professional development related to service-learning (presenting at a conference is highly recommended).
  • Faculty Fellows will serve as a mentor to incoming fellows and will support service-learning efforts offered by new fellows.
  • Faculty Fellows will promote service-learning at NIU and share ways of utilizing service-learning pedagogy.
  • Serve on Service-learning Review Committee.

Eligibility

The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program is open to all tenured and tenured track faculty involved in undergraduate teaching from any department on campus.
