Taste of Asia - NIU - Ellington's

Taste of Asia

Thursday, November 1 and December 6, 2012

A choice of one from each:

  • Miso Soup
This classic Japanese staple is accented with the simple, earthy taste of miso and mushroom, complimented with the sweet spice of ginger and traditional aromatics of garlic and onion.
  • Carrot and Cucumber Salad
Made from staples in the Korean kitchen, this salad is a refreshing blend of crispness and crunch featuring a spicy hint of red pepper balanced by the earthy taste of sesame.

  • Pork with Garlic and Nam Pla with Scallion Pancakes and Spicy Dipping Sauce
This Thai inspired dish of seared pork with garlic, pepper, and Nam Pla (Thai fish sauce) is accompanied by Scallion Pancakes with spicy dipping sauce which adds a tender, but chewy extra to have alongside, or topped with, the luscious pork.
  • Tofu Stir Fry with Noodles
Sriracha, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil add the perfect blend of spice, acidity, and depth to the tofu, red bell peppers, matchstick carrots, crunchy water chestnuts, and pea pods in this delectable stir fry served on a delightful bed of Asian noodles.

  • Five Spice Roasted Pears with Sesame Seeds
Chinese five spice powder is key to the rich aromatics in this dessert. A bit of lemon, sugar, and five spice tops the pears creating a complex palette of savory, mildly sweet flavor.
  • Thai Coconut Pudding with Cayenne-Spiced Mango
The creamy, irregular texture of tapioca is enhanced by the flavors of coconut, lemon grass, Thai basil, cilantro, and lime which create layers of flavor balanced by the spicy sweetness of cayenne-spiced mango chunks.
