Advising Procedures

Summer and Fall 2009 course offerings will be online at:  MyNIU.

ELE students must complete and submit an advising form every semester.

Which courses transfer from Illinois community colleges?  Course comparisons may be found in the Articulation Handbook.

All ELE undergrad students should:

  1. Print a copy of your Degree Progress Report (DPR) in MyNIU.
  2. Obtain an advising form.  (Forms are available on the ELE bulletin board and in the ELE office, EB 330.)
  3. Meet with your advisor  and complete the advising form together based on your DPR.  Ask questions!  Stop in during the advisor's open office hours or contact your advisor directly for an appointment.  Also, advising sign-up sheets are sometimes available on the advisors' office doors.  (Please do not call the ELE office.)
  4. Return the approved form to the ELE office (EB 330) to have the advising hold cleared.  Engineering undergrad students will NOT be able to register for ANY courses until the advising hold is cleared.
  5. Register for classes in MyNIU during the appropriate enrollment period (official registration for fall semester begins in April).

Please return your completed advising form to the ELE office at least 24 hours BEFORE your actual registration period begins.

M.S. Students:

Obtain an advising form and meet with their assigned advisors prior to course registration.

Obtaining permission does NOT guarantee you a seat in the class.  You still MUST register during the appropriate enrollment period.  To register, log on to MyNIU.

Undecided majors or students thinking of changing majors should visit the Academic Advising Center.

Degree Progress Report

The Degree Progress Report (the old DARS) is a statement of an undergraduate student's progress toward completion of university undergraduate academic requirements. Students should check their progress report in MyNIU at least once per semester after grades are posted, and prior to speaking with an advisor regarding academic progress.
