The NIU Center for Economic Education has three national winners for the InvestWrite 2011-2012 Competition! InvestWrite is an extension of the Stock Market Game in which students think critically about saving, investing, and spending wisely. In this writing contest, students write a 700 word essay to a given investment topic. Teachers can select only ten students from each class. Classroom winners are submitted online for judging at the national level-against students of their age all over the United States. The competition builds a bridge between classroom learning and the real world.
Teachers judged nearly 10,000 essays at the classroom level in the fall. Over 3,600 essays were submitted for judging at the national level. Illinois students representing NIU’s Center for Economic Education won first place, fourth place, and sixth place in the national competition for grades 4-5.
All three students attend Spring Brook Elementary in Indian Prairie School District 204 and have Kerry DiFusco as their gifted teacher.
Kerry DiFusco received an award for involving her students in Econ Education and was honored at The American Dream Dinner, a fund raiser and recognition dinner for economic education. Her student first place winner, Andrea Lee, spoke at the occasion on April 26. Ben Foy, 4th place winner and Emmy Calcaterra, 6th place winner, was recognized at the dinner.
