Emeritus Faculty...

Photo of Anthony Scaperlanda

Anthony E. Scaperlanda

Professor Scaperlanda was a member of the faculty of the Department of Economics for thirty-four years before retiring in 1998. In addition to his teaching, research, and public service, he served in many administrative roles: Chair of the Department in 1969-70 and 1994-98; Department Director of Graduate Studies 1975-79; and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 1984-86 and 1988-1990. He was Director to the NIU Office of Economic Education, a regional office of the Illinois Council of Economic Education, from 1995 until his retirement. After retirement he continued in NIU’s employment as Acting Chair of the Department of Economics through June of 1999. He was then appointed Interim Assistant Provost for Resource Planning at NIU, where he served from June 1999 through June 2001.

His dedication to his research, to alumni of the Economics Department, and to his friends on the faculty and staff at NIU continues after retirement. During 2001, he served as president of two international organizations: the Association for Social Economics and the International Trade and Finance Association. He continues to participate in the work of these organizations at their annual meetings.

His research and career-long teaching specialty is in international economics. The determinants and implications of the growth of multinational firms continues to be emphasized in his research work, especially the ethical and public policy implications of that growth for the peoples of both home and host countries. Results of this work can be found in these recent refereed articles:

“Global Society in 2052" Review of Social Economy, Vol. 60 (2002), pp.491-505.
