Integrating the arts and technology

Wright Elementary School students will enjoy a unique integration of the fine arts and technology into their standard school curriculum. At Wright, students will not only learn about music, theater, dance, the visual arts and computers, but also through each of those disciplines.

Put another way, the arts and technology become more than lessons: They become teaching strategies that enhance children’s learning and understanding of “the three Rs.”

In the first year — 2004-05 — the language arts curriculum will be enhanced with dance, drama, music and visual arts experiences that make reading and writing assignments more meaningful. In subsequent years, fine arts and technology integration will spread to the math and science curricula as well.

An example of successful arts integration may be found in last year’s “Barrel of Monkeys” program at Tyler Elementary school: a professional theater troupe by the same name helped children develop their writing skills by performing their poems and short plays in front of the whole school. During the week leading up to the performance, troupe members worked with the young writers to help them understand how to use language to make thoughts, hopes and dreams come alive onstage.
