Chesebro ElementaryHalf of the 298 children at Chesebro Elementary School are Hispanic, providing the catalyst for a new NIU-District 428 professional development school that concentrates on maximizing student achievement in reading, literacy and mathematics through implementing best practices – in English and Spanish – that transcend contemporary educational barriers such as language, race and socio-economic levels.

The partnership, which strives to educate students to reach their potential while preparing them for a global society, is developing a strong partnership among professors, pre-service teachers and experienced teaching staff while collaborating to provide outstanding instruction using progressive strategies in both English and Spanish.

Interns, teachers and administrators value and use the native languages and cultures of the students as assets. They are building a school culture and a professional development school collaboration that offers academic and personal success for students in English and Spanish.
