To our new students, Welcome, and to our returning students, Welcome Back:

The Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct is the department on campus that enforces the NIU Student Code of Conduct, other governing documents related to students and recognized student organizations, and University policies applicable to students.  As part of this enforcement, the office coordinates and operates the Student Conduct Process, which is outlined in the NIU Student Code of Conduct.

For students who are found “responsible” by a Student Conduct Board or Administrative Hearing Officer, or who accept responsibility for violating the NIU Student Code of Conduct, NIU Community Standards, or other applicable policy, there are consequences.  These consequences are commonly referred to as “sanctions.”  For a complete list of sanctions, please click here.

From time to time, various constituencies within the institution suggest changes to the Student Code of Conduct and to operating procedures within the student conduct process.  With the advice and consent of the Office of the Vice-President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct is introducing new sanctions for students who violate the NIU Student Code of Conduct, specifically in regard to alcohol, drugs, and violence.

Students who repeatedly violate these provisions of the NIU Student Code of Conduct will face progressively more severe sanctions for each subsequent violation.

The table below outlines the minimal sanctions that will be imposed upon students who are found “responsible” for violating specific provisions of the NIU Student Code of Conduct.  The new sanctions are aligned more appropriately with the behavioral expectations of our Community.  Complacency surrounding alcohol, drugs, violence, or any form of injustice will not be tolerated on this campus.  This is the overarching rationale for the change rests upon NIU’s assurance to be a safe and healthy campus learning environment, one that both challenges and inspires students to be academically and personally successful.  To foster such an environment, partnership and commitment on behalf of the faculty, staff, and students to honor and abide by these standards is critical.

If you have any questions about these new sanctions, please contact the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct at 815-753-1571.
