For more than two decades both the University and the Department of Communication have sponsored events that promote awareness and appreciation for the diverse cultures and experiences of our students. As a department, our goal is to give voice and validation to these aspects of our students’ lives. Our aim is to foster an environment that encourages diversity, cultivates tolerance, and enhances each student’s uniqueness. Therefore, each year we proudly sponsor a speech contest for COMS 100 and COMS 100P students.
“Unity in Diversity: Embrace it, Live it, Experience it!” will afford students the opportunity to discuss their cultural identity, their experiences, and their self-representation. Students are encouraged to use their informative speeches to demonstrate how sharing their personal journeys can help shape the future and/or promote understanding in our society.
The following criterion has been established:
The top 6 speakers will advance to the final round and receive certificates attesting to their participation. The top 3 will receive awards and an invitation to the Annual Diversity and Equity Gala held in April.
Participation is voluntary, but please encourage your students to take part. This experience is a positive resume builder and an activity worth mentioning on scholarship or organization applications.
If you need more information, please contact Melissa Entzminger via email mentzminger1@niu.edu or Lisa Roth via email lroth1@niu.edu. Judging information will be announced soon, so watch your mail!
We look forward to this year’s contest!
