Communication Studies & Journalism Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Communication offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees in Communication Studies and in Journalism. 

Communication Studies includes emphases in

The Journalism major has courses in print journalism, journalism theory and history, graphic design, public relations, media convergence and broadcast news.

In addition, the department offers courses of study for the following:

Within a Communication Studies major, students can focus in a single emphasis or pursue a combination of the following emphases: Rhetoric and Public Communication & Media Studies or Media Studies & Organizational/Corporate Communication. Some students may pursue a double major in Communication and Journalism.

The Department offers courses in the following General Education Pathways:

  • Health and Wellness
  • Learning
  • Social Justice and Diversity
  • Sustainability

Some of the department's lower-division courses can be used by non-majors toward fulfilling area requirements in the university's general education program. Courses in the department's curriculum may also be utilized in interdisciplinary minors such as Global Studies, LGBT Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies.
