Frequently Asked Questions

We give advice on communication and journalism major and minor classes, programs and opportunities in the department of communication or in other areas at NIU. We help track your progress towards completing your major and minor degrees in COMS/JOUR.

Students are welcome to contact us whenever they need advice or assistance. Students are not required to visit us for major advising, but we strongly encourage meeting at least once every mid-October (advising for upcoming spring) and late March (advising for summer and fall).

We do not require a minimum GPA or prerequisite courses for admission. If you are an active student, you can declare in COMS or JOUR. Each program has its own requirements for courses and what constitutes passing. Please see the catalog for that information.
