SUBSTITUIONS FOR COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT COURSES FOR STUDENTS USING OLDER CATALOGS (BEFORE 2008 - 2009)

(In Light of 2008 - 2009 Catalog Requirements - Effective during 2008 - 2009 academic year, Begins Fall 2008)

COMMUNICATION EMPHASIS 2: Media Studies

Students in any catalog prior to 2008-2009 may choose any 2007-2008 electives from the list (see advising checklist or undergraduate catalog) and may sub COMS 358 for COMS 357.

COMMUNICATION EMPHASIS 3:  Organizational/Corporate Communication

COMS 302 subs for COMS 461A or 461B.
COMS 303 subs for COMS 405.
COMS 305 subs for COMS 200.
COMS 410 subs for COMS 402.
COMS 491 subs for COMS 404 or the combination of COMS 404 and COMS 495A (if total is 38).
COMS 491 or COMS 404 subs for COMS 495A if the student has earned 38 or more COMS credit hours.  (For Org/Corp only)
COMS 496C subs for COMS 403, COMS 455 or JOUR 480 (**only when COMS 496C is Organizational Ethics)
Any COMS or JOUR course for COMS 497, 498A or 498B.

ALSO NOTE:

1. Students should take only one law class – COMS 403 or COMS 455 or JOUR 480 – in their major, major/minor or double major.  (For example, a JOUR major or minor may take JOUR 480 to fulfill the requirement, then use a different course – not COMS 403 or COMS 455, just a COMS elective – in their COMS major or minor.)
2. COMS majors and minors need a cumulative 2.0 average in their COMS course work. As long as that 2.0 is maintained, students may receive a 'D' or 'F'. Classes, in which low grades are received, may be repeated to attain the needed 2.0 average. ( JOUR majors and minors need a 'C' or better in every JOUR course ).
3. Bachelor of Science Degree requirements have been broadened to include any College of Liberal Arts and Sciences option. (And BSA/OMIS 259 subs for CSCI 210; BSA/OMIS/UBUS 223 subs for STAT 301.)
4. All substitutions require official forms to be filed the semester a student is to graduate.
