Communication and Journalism Advising

Advising for the Department of Communication is split into declared majors and minors and Pre-Communication students. The undergraduate academic advisor for all emphasis declared COMS and JOUR majors and minors is Susan Oppenborn and she is located in Watson 217. If you are still a declared Pre-COMS major, however, please contact either Madelyn Anderson or Deena Kerwin at 815-753-7104 located in Watson 306 for Pre-COMS advising.

Susan works primarily by appointment and the sign-up sheet is located on her door. There are some limited walk-in advising hours each week on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 2PM to 4PM and Wednesday mornings from 9AM to 11AM. To schedule an appointment, please visit the office and sign up via the sign-up sheets as the department cannot schedule appointments via email or phone.

Susan is available Monday through Friday from 9AM to 12:30PM and 1:30PM to 4PM to assist declared majors and minors with questions about degree requirements, graduation, and course selections. Any questions not related specifically to the major or minor (like university requirements of gen eds, core competency, and BA/BS courses) are handled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences office in Zulauf 201 and can be reached at 815-753-0114.

For specific advising about questions related to your chosen career path, please still continue to see the faculty in your chosen emphasis.
