What do you do as my major advisor?

We give advice on communication and journalism major and minor classes, programs and opportunities in the department of communication or in other areas at NIU. We help track your progress towards completing your major and minor degrees in COMS/JOUR.

How often should I come see you?

Students are welcome to contact us whenever they need advice or assistance. Students are not required to visit us for major advising, but we strongly encourage meeting at least once every mid-October (advising for upcoming spring) and late March (advising for summer and fall).

What are the entrance requirements for the Communication Studies and Journalism programs?

We do not require a minimum GPA or prerequisite courses for admission. If you are an active student, you can declare in COMS or JOUR. Each program has its own requirements for courses and what constitutes passing. Please see the catalog for that information.

How do I sign up for a COMS 498A/COMS 498B Independent Study credit or a JOUR 495 Directed Individual Study credit?

You cannot enroll in these yourself. You must complete a form and get permission from a professor to take this credit. Links to those forms are here and here.

How do I sign up for an internship credit in COMS or JOUR?

You cannot enroll in these yourself. You must fill out an application form for internship credit and turn it in to Jack King, the director of Student Professional Development.

How do I sign up for a COMS 407 practicum credit?
