Contemporary Issues in Our World’s Religions

Christianity

Christianity, the world’s dominant religion, is based upon the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  Find out about the history and origins of the religion, which has played a prominent role in the development of Western civilization.  Discuss theological issues surrounding Christianity today, including women’s roles in the church, cloning, and abuse by church elders.

Islam

In the 21st century, Islam is considered to be the fastest growing religion in the world. Muslims, the adherents of Islam, believe in worshipping in God directly, without the intervention of another person (a priest, a clergy, or saints).  Explore the Five Pillars of Islam, the Koran, and Islam’s relationship with other world religions. Discuss current attitudes toward Islamic society and culture.

Asian

The fascinating religious and philosophical worldviews of Asia developed over the course of many years.  Learn about the connections between Eastern religions, such as how Buddhism grew out of Hinduism.  Discover how Taoism was developed out of a theory on nature, and how Confucianism offers an early basis for family values, as well as political issues.
