Genocide Institute Returns to NIU!
DeKalb, IL –
You have all heard of Darfur. But do you know that more people are dying each day in the Congo as a result of the lingering effects of the Rwandan genocide of 1994? The Hutu-Tutsi violence has not ended, it has only been relocated.
Have you ever heard of the Pontian Greeks? They too were victims of the atrocities committed by Turkey in 1915. But do you know that Turkish Cypriots were also targeted for annihilation during the 1960s?
Do you consider the destruction of the Native Americans to be a genocide? They do.
What about the continued violations of the rights of Native Hawaiians, the Ainu peoples of Japan, the people of Tibet?
Sadly, the list of genocides, genocidal actions, gross human rights violations, and human rights violations is too long to detail. But the list also tells us that these kinds of actions and events are not atypical or extreme, they are on-going and systematic parts of the world order, both ancient and modern.
The cry "never again" rings hollow precisely because we have not done a good enough job at teaching ourselves and our students about these kinds of events. I hope that you will thus join us for two weeks of intensive learning, discussion, and engagement on the historical and contemporary manifestations of genocide and human rights. It is an experience that you will not forget, it is one that will rejuvenate you for the classroom, and it is one that will lead you down the path to making a difference.
