Study Government and Politics in Washington D.C.
POLS 497: P002 - Small-Group Study in Political Science
March 11-14, 2012

Students and faculty will travel to the nation's capital for an intensive four-day, three-night, hands-on seminar in government and politics. We will tour and meet officials at the White House, Congress, and Supreme Court. The seminar will take place at the beginning of spring break.

Students are required to enroll in POLS 497: P002, spring 2012, through MyNIU.

Fee includes accommodations, dinner March 11 at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill, a DC alumni reception, and pre-paid Metro Card for transportation in DC.

Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from DC.

A non-refundable deposit if $250 is due by January 20, 2012, with the balance due by February 17, 2012. 

Course Requirements:
Students are required to attend a March 2 mandatory orientation meeting on the NIU campus as well as all program events in Washington D.C. Readings will be provided by the instructor and students are required to keep a journal of their experiences during this trip. The journal is due at a mandatory debriefing meeting at NIU March 23 (time and location TBA). The course grade will be based on attendance at the mandatory meetings and events.

Accommodations:
Students will share rooms (two students per room) with two queen beds at the Doubletree Suites located at 1515 Rhode Island Ave., NW, near Dupont Circle and the White House. The hotel has a fitness center and restaurant and is within walking distance of Metro stops, restaurants, and attractions.

5:00 pm - Arrive in DC, check into hotel
8:30 pm - Dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill (included)

Monday, March 12
9:00 am - Tour U.S. Supreme Court
12:00 pm - Lunch on your own at Supreme Court Cafeteria
1:30 pm - Meet w/staff and local member of U.S. House
2:30 pm - Tour U.S. Capitol
3:30 pm - Visit House & Senate galleries
Dinner on your own

Tuesday, March 13
9:00 am - Tour of the White House
10:30 am - Meet w/White House staffer
Lunch on your own at the Longworth House Office Building
Tour D.C. Monuments
6:00 pm - Final program reception with DC-area alumni
Dinner on your own

Depart D.C.
