    APPLICATION and INFORMATION

The Genocide and Human Rights Summer Institute

June 14-26, 2009

Application Deadline:  The deadline for applications is March 20, 2009.  Applicants applying after March 20 will be accepted based upon availability.  Applicants will be notified by April 1, 2009 with an initial deposit due by April 10, 2009. 

 

Institute Fee: Total cost for participation is $1,550 ($1,650 after April 20, 2009) per person.  Cost includes three graduate Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts & Sciences (ILAS) credit hours ($1005 payable through MyNIU) and all institute fees ($545 payable to NIU Outreach; $645 after April 20) which includes Chicago-Washington D.C. round trip airfare, Metropass, housing, board (all meals in DeKalb, 5 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 3 dinners in Washington D. C.), museum admissions, and all materials (readings, CD-Rom, binder, etc.).

 

Initial Deposit:  Upon acceptance, an initial deposit of $375 will be due by April 10, 2009 (applicable toward Institute fee).

 

Scholarships & Funding:  Some scholarship funds are available.  Click here for scholarship form.  For more information, contact J.D. Bowers at jbowersi@niu.edu or (815) 753-6655. In the past both school districts and grant agencies have paid for teachers to attend the Institute.  Please check with your district or administrators on this issue.  The Institute sessions cover substantial amounts of US history so that TAH Grants have paid for participation.

 

Application:  A completed application consists of the following:

2.      A letter of support from a departmental or school administrator

3.      A statement of interest explaining your interest in genocide and human rights, your background in the subject areas, what you are currently teaching, and what you hope to get out of your participation in the Institute.  Please limit your essay to two pages.

 

Cancellations/Refunds:  Enrollment limited to 20.  Requests for refunds are accepted if written notification is received no later than May 1, 2008. Initial refund requests will be issued minus airfare costs and a $50 processing fee.  Cancellations received after May 1, 2008, will be charged 50% of the total program fee. Substitutions are allowed but may have to pay additional costs for airfare changes.  All reservations confirmed by payment.  Full refunds are given when NIU cancels a program or when a program with limited enrollment is over-subscribed.
