Conference for Young Women

October 6, 2008

We are pleased to sponsor the 2008 NIU Conference for Young Women on Monday, October 6, 8:15 a.m. - 1:45 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center on NIU’s DeKalb campus.  The NIU Conference for Young Women offers an exciting chance for female high school students to explore career possibilities as well as the academic side of college life.

Now in its thirteenth year, this popular conference has been praised by many participants with diverse interests and backgrounds.  According to one young woman, the conference “increased [her] confidence as a woman thinking in her future plans to go to college and pursue [her] career goals;" another participant said, "It was a great experience and fun to connect with other girls that have goals a lot like mine!"

The conference introduces high school women to careers in a variety of fields and provides opportunities to interact with successful women faculty and NIU students.  The day will feature tours of selected campus facilities and presentations by NIU faculty, including:

     • Tours of the NIU campus

     • Presentations by NIU faculty on topics relevant to women’s collegiate experience and career choices.  For example, female professors will discuss their work in such areas as microbiology, computer programming, the arts, and business management.

     • Panel discussions in which NIU faculty talk about career fields and professional opportunities for women in such fields as politics, sports training, and law enforcement;

     • Lunch with NIU faculty, professionals, and students.

The registration fee for the Young Women’s Conference is $38 before September 29 ($43 after September 29) and includes lunch.  Registration is limited to 30 sophomore, junior or senior female students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please encourage one or two of your students to participate in this exciting event.  We look forward to meeting some of your students.
