College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Advising - Zulauf Hall 201 - 815-753-0114

Graduation Check

We strongly recommend that you schedule a round of advising appointments with your College of Liberal Arts & Sciences advisor, your major advisor(s) and minor advisor(s) ONE or TWO semesters PRIOR to your graduation term so you can ensure that your final registrations include the correct combination of courses to complete your degree. (To obtain the best and most thorough advising, you should be consulting regularly with your advisors throughout your time at NIU, but these final advising sessions are especially crucial.) Ultimately, it is your responsibility to verify that all your degree requirements have been met.

Start by checking your Degree Progress Report in MyNIU. Any deficiencies (indicated in red or bold type) must be resolved in order to graduate.

  • If deficiencies appear in your major, go to the department office for your major for clarification.
  • If deficiencies appear in your minor, go to the department office for your minor for clarification.
  • If deficiencies appear in your core competencies, distributive studies or BA/BS requirements, make an appointment to see an advisor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences office for clarification. (Set an appointment at Zulauf Hall 201 or call 815-753-0114.)

Be aware that all NIU students must earn at least 120 credit hours to graduate. Of those, at least 40 credit hours must be in upper-division courses (300- and 400-level).

To meet residency requirements, after earning 80 credit hours, at least 30 credit hours must be taken through NIU. If you transferred to NIU, your total hours earned must include at least 54 hours taken at four-year institutions such as NIU.

Your cumulative grade point average, major and minor GPA at NIU must be 2.0 or higher. Any incompletes (“I”) must be resolved. Also, if your minor or teacher certification appears incomplete on your Degree Progress Report and is not required for your specific program/major, it will be deleted from your record so you will clear for graduation. (This is not a complete list of requirements; please consult your Undergraduate Catalog for additional rules and regulations that may pertain to you.)

You apply for graduation through MyNIU. To do so, log on to http://www.reg.niu.edu/regrec/graduation.

If you have questions regarding the commencement ceremony, please check http://www.niuconvo.com/commencement. Attending the commencement ceremony does not guarantee that you have graduated.

After you have applied for graduation, if you find it necessary to postpone your graduation date, you must notify Registration & Records (regrec@niu.edu) in writing of your revised graduation term within 30 days after the actual graduation date that was originally declared.
