Boy Scouts visit to earn chemistry merit badge
On Friday, October 7, NIU Alumnus and Boy Scout Troop Leader Andy Rollins (joined by a wonderful group of leaders/chaperones) brought about 25 boy scouts for a visit to the department. Their goal -- to fulfill their chemistry merit badge requirements!
The day included:
- Touring the department with Professor Ballantine;
- Visiting with Professor Hagen to learn about what a chemist does and the education needed to be a chemist;
- Learning about pollution and the environment with Professor Ryzhov;
- Practicing chemical safety with Lab Manager Andy Small (which included discharging a fire extinguisher!); and
- Completing the necessary lab experiments to successfully earn their chemistry merit badges.
Thanks for visiting! We enjoyed this great group of scouts!
