NIU chemistry students visit Abbott
On November 12, 2010, members of the NIU Chem Club and students in CHEM 432/632, Physical Organic Chemistry, visited Abbott in North Chicago, Illinois. Abbott is a global, broad-based health care company that discovers new medicines, new technologies and new ways to manage health. Headquartered in north suburban Chicago, Abbott is one of the largest employers in the Chicago area. The visit was organized by NIU Assistant Professor Timothy Hagen. NIU Lab Manager Andy Small also joined the group as a chaperone and escort for the visit.
Students had the opportunity to visit chemistry labs and meet with chemists who work at Abbott, including several NIU chemistry alumni. Drs. Gregory Webster and Cynthia Pommerening, both having earned their Ph.D. degrees at NIU, served as hosts and led the group through chemistry labs including analytical and instrumentation labs, formulation labs and the new state-of-the-art formulation building where active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are made into various dosage forms. This visit was an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions of professional chemists working in industry and to tour the Abbott facility.
