In Honor of Glassblower Dan Edwards
The NIU Chem Club generously donated $2000 towards the Chemistry Club Ed Hyland Award Fund. The Ed Hyland Award provides financial support for an undergraduate Chemistry or Biochemistry major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and service to the department during their academic career at NIU. The award was named after Ed Hyland who was the departmental glassblower for many years (retired in 1990) and who supported the NIU Chemistry Club by donating his time and talents to our annual Holiday Glassblowing Demonstration and Glass Sale. The funds raised by the sale support the various activities of the Chem Club throughout the year.
This recent contribution to the fund has been made possible as a result of the efforts of Dan Edwards who, as Ed Hyland's replacement, has been the departmental glassblower for the last 17 years. During his time here at NIU, Edwards has provided invaluable service to the department and the Chem Club. He has taken a personal interest in the success of the Chem Club and its undergraduate members, donating many hours of his free time to make the many items for the glass sale. In recent years Edwards has taken the Holiday Glass Sale to a new level, and the surplus funds that have been generated as a result of his efforts are represented in this contribution.
In recognition of his generous support, the members of the NIU Chem Club voted unanimously to not only make this donation, but to also rename the award. It is now the NIU Chemistry Club Edwards–Hyland Award.
