Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Scholarship Fund

William Mickols received his undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biology in 1977 and his Master's Degree in Biochemistry in 1978, all from NIU. After NIU, William went on to earn his Ph.D. in physical chemistry and landed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1985, he joined the Dow Chemical Company, focusing on improving water desalination. Today, 80 percent of Dow/FilmTec water desalination products originate from projects led by William, membranes he developed, or chemistry he invented.

This scholarship, established by William, and his wife, Arlene, are establishing this scholarship with the intention that it be awarded to students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry who need financial assistance.

NIU Chemistry Club Edwards-Hyland Award

This endowed scholarship has been established by the NIU Chemistry Club for the purpose of awarding academically talented and involved NIU undergraduate chemistry majors. The award is named in recognition of departmental glassblowers Ed Hyland, who retired in 1990, and Dan Edwards, who had planned to retire in July 2008, but died suddenly in a motorcycle accident in April 2008. Both Edwards and Hyland have generously supported the NIU Chemistry Club by donating their time and talents to its annual Holiday Glassblowing Demonstration and Glass Sale, helping to raise funds for the various Chem Club activities throughout the year.
