NIU Glass Shop

A very unique asset to Northern Illinois University is that it possesses its own scientific glass shop. Located in Room 100 of La Tourette Hall (formerly Faraday West), the Glass Shop offers fabrication of new laboratory glass, modification of existing apparatus, repairs, and custom scientific glass.

In 1959, a glassblowing facility had been incorporated into the design of Faraday Hall and Ed Hyland was hired as the first glassblower in 1966. Ed Hyland retired in 1991 and was replaced by Dan Edwards. In 1995, the new addition of Faraday West was completed. The new building was designed with more modern and efficient equipment to allow for the manufacture of more complex apparatus.

Jason Gordon

Unfortunately after 16 years of dedication, Dan passed away in 2008. In January of 2009, Jason Gordon (right) started working for the Chemistry Department. Jason has over 20 years of experience in the semiconductor, medical, analytical and pharmaceutical glassware industry. NIU's glass shop can produce scientific glass with the superiority and excellence that is necessary. With a shop rate of $50.00 per hour plus materials, most glassware can be produced at a very competitive rate.

The NIU Glass Shop is highly qualified in producing various types of glass used in the scientific industry. The most common for laboratory glassware is borosilicate glass. It has a high chemical and thermal resistance, both of which are required in all glass apparatus used in the chemical industry. The second most common glass used in the scientific field is quartz glass. Quartz glass is used when high temperature or high purity conditions exist for the particular chemical reaction.
