CHEM BLAST 2011
NIU chemistry invites the public to have a blast
On Tuesday, March 29, the Chem Club hosted Chem Blast 2011, an evening of chemical demonstrations enjoyed by all. Audience volunteers were blown away by the Wind Cannon (left hoto). How can you drive a tack into wood using a banana? Or make a quick and easy coleslaw? With liquid nitrogen, of course!

More memorable experiments included the dichromate volcano, non-burning towel, dragon's breath (right photo), Mentos soda pop drop, underwater sparks, genie in a bottle, and thermite reaction.
The evening concluded with the most flavorable demo -- the making of liquid nitrogen ice cream...and all the toppings!
NIU STEMFEST 2010
NIU will transform Spooky Science Saturday into mega-science festival at Convocation Center / NIU students see importance of STEMfest
On October 23, STEMfest 2010 engaged nearly 3,000 people and delivered an entire Convocation Center full of hands-on activities for families. Nearly 200 NIU student volunteers assisted kids of all ages with hands-on activities and drew rave reviews for their expertise and their teaching skills.
Faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry participated hosting three booths -- the Chem Club celebrated with Mole Day activities, Professors Horn and Hagen's groups presented strategies in drug design, and Professor Gaillard's group disected cow eyes.
