Funded Research Projects

  • Project SMILE, Funded by Verizon Foundation. 12/04 – 12/08. Developed and offered a series of engineering content modules offered to students at regional junior high schools to provide information and interest in careers in engineering. Total amount awarded - $50,000
  • Research and Development of Micromachining concepts and Equipment. Funded through a grant from the U.S. Army, TACOM (Obtained through College). 5/05-5/06. This project was one of a group of projects involved in the micromachining realm. Served as the project manager and researcher in the development of a light-weight machining platform to support micromachining center. The platform uses a combination of materials with passive and active damping to remove all vibration from this precise application – Total amount awarded - $200,000 (Approx).
  • Aurora Teacher Education Training. Funded through Illinois Board of Higher Education (with Zollman and Otieno), 4/05 – 4/06. Partially developed and administered summer training program for 20 middle school teachers in the area of math and science. Total amount awarded - $125,000.
  • Glen Ellyn Teacher Education Training. Funded through Illinois Board of Higher Education (with Zollman and Otieno), 4/05 – 4/06. Partially developed and administered summer training program for 38 school teachers in the area of math and science. Total amount awarded - $140,000.
  • Development of Technical Writing Skills Training. Funded by Baxter Healthcare (with Otieno and Jacky), 5/06-12/06. Developed a series of short courses and on-line courses for Baxter on the topic of technical writing. The short courses were delivered to groups of their technical employees. Total amount awarded - $60,000.
  • Research and Development of Micromachining Concepts and Equipment. Funded through a grant from the U.S. Army, TACOM (obtained by College). 8/07-present. This project was a sub-project within the federal grant received by NIU and it is involved in the micromachining realm. Served as the project manager and lead researcher in the development of a low cost micromilling machine. The machine was developed using state of the art hardware and software to create 3-D parts with 2-3 micron accuracies. Project also utilizes dimensional metrology techniques to ensure needed manufacturing accuracy. Total amount of sub-project - $250,000.
  • Research and Development of Energy Efficiency in the Railroad Industry.  Funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. 8/08-12/09. Serve as the PI (with Vohra) on this project which seeks to develop energy efficiency in this industry. This project deals with bio-based fuels, fuel-cell application, thermal efficiency, novel uses of materials, and tribology. The overall goal is to utilize new technologies in an older established industry. This project includes 11 engineering and technology faculty, as well as 10 graduate and 8 undergraduate students. In addition, it is spawning undergraduate senior projects in both areas, as well as several masters theses. Total amount awarded - $1.0 Million.
  • Research and Development of Energy Efficiency in the Railroad Industry (Phase 2).  Funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. 9/10-6/12. Serve as the PI on this project (with Vohra) which seeks to develop energy efficiency in the railroad industry. This project deals with bio-based fuels and new fuel development and efficiencies through reduction in friction and wear on components. This project includes 6 engineering and technology faculty, as well as 15 graduate and many undergraduate students. Total amount awarded - $1.0 Million.
  • Operation ETank: Moving Toward a Sustainable World – Funded by the National Science Foundation, from 4/12 – 4/16 - An Undergraduate Educational Research Award (with Changnon, D., Freeman, L., Rigg, L., and Spears, J.). Developing research interests in Undergraduate STEM students from across the country. Total amount awarded - $515,542.
  • Development of Engineering Technology program for University of Malaysia – Funded by the University of Malaysia, Pahang (with Ghrayeb and Vohra) from 6/12 – present – Developed complete model for undergraduate programs in Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Energy and Environmental Technology programs in Malaysia. Total amount awarded - $240,000 (first two phases).
