Dr. Abdel-Motaleb has extensive administrative experience in academia, where he chaired or served on almost every committee at the department, college and university levels.

    • Oversaw faculty development, laboratory development, curriculum development, assessment, recruitment, retention, budget, industrial contacts, purchasing, personnel, tenure and promotion, sabbatical leave, advising, hiring, and running the day-to-day affairs of the department
  • Director of the Microelectronic Research and Development Laboratory (MRDL)
    • Manage a multimillion-dollar laboratory where an advanced design, fabrication, and characterization facility is housed. The facility contains material growth systems, diffusion furnaces, oxidation furnaces, mask generation, photolithography, Atom Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), electron beam deposition, ion milling, plasma etching and deposition, sputtering, thick film, packaging, and analytical analysis systems.
  • Director of the Biomedical Engineering program

Achievements as a Department Chair

  • Increased enrollment by 121 percent over two years
  • Increased external funding from $89,448 to $1,026,334 over two years
  • Obtained in-kind equipment grant of about $3M over two years
    • Similar grants over the previous eight years totaled $3.3M
  • Faculty publication in journals and refereed conferences rose to 4 papers per year from 1.4 papers previously
  • Rate of journal publication per faculty per year increased to 1.5, 158 percent the required rate for tenure
  • Faculty published two textbooks and three book chapters in two years
  • Increased the rate of external funding per faculty per year from 74.5 percent to 427 percent
  • In 2011, with the retirement of 20 percent of the faculty, the department still:
