Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

There are a variety of ways to pay for college, including scholarships, grants, and loans.  Check on information regarding the financial aid process at Northern through the Student Financial Aid website.

NIU-Specific Information

Northern Illinois University has two scholarships currently available for students with disabilities. Each scholarship has a specific application process.

It is recommended that students also look at the general scholarships that are available through the Northern Illinois University Scholarship Office. They have a searchable database of scholarships available for all NIU students.

Non-NIU Resources

A limited listing of other possible resources for scholarships outside Northern Illinois University for students with disabilities is listed below. Northern Illinois University, and the Center for Access-Ability Resources, do not recommend or endorse any of the resources. The information is provided solely as additional information and resources for students and their parents.

The Schwallie Family Scholarship program, administered by the Organization for Autism Research, awards three scholarships of $3,000 each to support qualified individuals with autism or Asperger Syndrome who are living in the U.S. and pursuing post-secondary education. Awards are in three categories: four-year undergraduate college or university; two-year undergraduate college; and trade, technical or vocational school. Apply online at www.researchautism.org/news/otherevents/scholarship.asp. The application deadline is April 30, 2012.
