Interpreter Request Guidelines
CAAR provides interpreting services for NIU faculty, staff and students. To request interpreting services, read the following guidelines and agree to them by clicking the Continue button at the bottom of this page.
- Request forms must be submitted 48 hours in advance, except for off-campus requests, which must be submitted at least one week in advance.
- Requests are fulfilled in the order in which they are received.
- Phone requests at 815-753-6531are accepted between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm. You can leave a message but please confirm during business hours.
- Requests can not be shared. Each person individually needs to submit a request.
- If an interpreter cannot be provided, the Interpreting Office will notify you or the department.
Changes in requests
You must notify the Interpreting Office of any changes (location, time, etc.).
No Show/Cancellation Policy
You must notify Interpreter Services in advance if you will not be attending a class. You must call even if there are others in the class using interpreter. Cancellations must be made in person or by phone at (815) 753-6515 voice tty or (815) 753-6531 voice tty.
- For 8:00am and 9:00am classes, the student, faculty, or staff must call the interpreter or CAAR office no later than 7:00am.
- For 10:00am or later classes, the student, faculty, or staff must call the interpreter or CAAR office at least 2 hours before the beginning of class.
After second no show/no call per class or assignment per semester:
- If you do not show up for a class or assignment two times without advance notice, interpreter services will be suspended for that class or assignment until you arrange a meeting with the Coordinator.
- After this meeting, interpreter services will resume.
After third no show/no call per class or assignment per semester:
- The third no show for that class or assignment will result in cancellation of regular interpreter services for that class.
- To obtain interpreters for future sessions of that class or assignment, you must schedule another meeting with the Coordinator to review future eligibility.
