Withdrawal Information
If after registering for classes, the student decides to withdraw from a course or leave the university, he/she must contact the Dean's Office of his/her major college. The Office of the Bursar will make any appropriate adjustment to the charges on the student account once all the proper withdrawal procedures have been followed (see the NIU catalog or contact the Dean's Office for more detailed information).
Merely ceasing to attend classes does NOT cancel enrollment or qualify the student for a reduction of course charges.
Students receiving financial aid AND withdrawing: If the student receives financial aid and withdraws, he/she may be required to repay a portion of their awards. The exact amount to be repaid to financial aid accounts will be determined by the amount of aid received, the educational costs incurred, and the length of time attended during the semester. Tuition and course charges will be reduced accordingly.
Types of Withdrawals and How they Reduce Course Fees
Note: It is the date the student officially withdraws which determines the percent of charge reduction for which the student is eligible.
-
Course Withdrawal: A student who withdraws from a course within the first 15 calendar days of the term may be eligible for a refund of 100% of tuition and fees associated with that course. University Withdrawal: A student who officially withdraws from the university may receive a refund of tuition and standard fees. If the official withdrawal date is on or prior to the 15th calendar day of the term, a 100% refund of tuition and standard fees will be issued. If after the 15th calendar day of the term, but prior to the 60% point in time of the term, the student will receive a partial refund of tuition and standard fees according to a prorated schedule. If the official withdrawal date is after the 60% point in time of the term, no refund will be issued.

Division of Student Affairs must be contacted. In addition, University Health Services requires medical documentation for all university withdrawals due to medical reasons.
