Undergraduate Tuition, Fees, & Surcharges

Truth-In-Tuition Extension

In accordance with Public Act 93-0228, Northern Illinois University provides newly enrolled Illinois residents, who are first-time degree seeking undergraduate students, a fixed tuition rate for a time period of nine continuous academic terms (view theAdobe Acrobat icon truth-in-tuition policy (pdf)).

Students who have exhausted their fixed tuition eligibility and still have not completed their degree at the end of the 9th semester, will be subject to a tuition increase. This amount is equivalent to the rate paid by students who entered the university two (2) fiscal years after the date of their original entry (view undergraduate tuition rates).

Extension Appeal Criteria

Northern Illinois University will consider student appeals for a ONE SEMSETER extension of the original tuition rate under certain unusual or extenuating circumstances.

The following are examples that would and would not merit a review to consider an extension:

Would merit a review for an extension:

  • A specific program plan prescribed by the Center for Access-Ability Resources (CAAR).
  • Significant university-initiated curricular changes to your academic degree requirements which increased the number of required hours by at least 12 semester hours.
  • Having a university withdrawal granted for more than one semester for medical or military reasons.

** Note: Submitting an appeal under these circumstances does not guarantee an extension. **

Would NOT merit a review for an extension:

  • A significant number of course withdrawals.
  • A history of repeated courses.
  • Significant hours of electives that are not relevant to your current degree program.
  • Periods of non-enrollment.
  • Lack of initial academic preparation.
  • A change of major.
