Round Storage Box

Gilded lacquer

Burma/Myanmar; 20th Century
DU 1979.8; Denison University
Gift from Robert Leake

Because of its large size, this type of lacquer box was used to store cosmetics or even clothing. It is painted with red lacquer on the inside, and the outside is decorated with moulded lacquer bands of chu pan and la cheik designs. Chu pan is a coil-like foliage pattern which is often used in lacquer, wood carving, and metal designs. The la cheik pattern is composed of two or more elements which are twisted together to form an undulating line. Rev. Leake was a Baptist minister in Columbus, OH.
