Kinnari

Gilded, lacquered wood and glass inlays

Burma/Myanmar, Mandalay Period: c. 19th Century
BC 87.01.02.00; Northern Illinois University
Konrad and Sarah Bekker Collection

A kinnari (the female figure) is always seen coupled with her kinnari male counterpart. But contrary to the male in the NIU pair, her legs below the knees are those of a bird's. Also, she does not wear the salwé.
