The new logo will replace the last official logo, the "Centennial Logo," as well as the NIU Wordmark. This process DOES NOT affect the Huskie Athletics logo or the Presidential Seal (reserved for use on materials related to the Office of the President, Board of Trustees, or university documents of a formal and official nature, i.e. diplomas, certificates, transcripts).
The university's new logo works hand-in-hand with its new “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow” tagline. The trademarked logo is the visual component of NIU’s communications efforts to strategically convey a consistent institutional identity.
During the Spring 2011 semester, the Marketing and Branding Committee and the Division of University Relations worked to identify a new university logo to convey a unified and consistent institutional visual identity. After much discussion, several guidelines for the logo development process emerged:
- First, the NIU Huskies athletic logo seems to be universally well-liked and admired for its clarity, design simplicity and overall graphic appeal. Therefore, the university's logo should reflect some of these aesthetic design qualities.
- Second, the university's logo should be architecturally based around NIU's signature campus building, Altgeld Hall.
- Third, the new logo design should not be too intricate because it will be used across all mediums, including electronic/online formats.
- Finally, the logo must retain its visual appeal in one-color use and should be able to easily incorporate sub-branding for colleges and departments.
The logo development process was open to all graphic designers on campus. The designers group created and reviewed more than 75 logo concepts and forwarded the top 25 to the Marketing and Branding Committee for further consideration. At the same time, University Relations engaged the services of the Pennsylvania-based Joe Bosack Graphic Design Co. to bring additional perspective to the logo development process.
Two logo concepts emerged for campus and constituency input, and feedback was sought through both formal and informal survey mechanisms. In both polls, the new logo was preferred by an overwhelming margin.
The new logo will debut on the NIU homepage Monday, Aug. 15, and will be implemented across all websites using the NIU templates in Cascade Server beginning Sept. 1. Beginning Aug. 15, 2012, the university will require all units to use the new logo exclusively. Meanwhile, effective immediately, NIU Document Services will print only the new logo on all new jobs, including re-orders of previous print jobs.
