Grade Center categories are helpful in organizing and utilizing the Grade Center.  Faculty can sort the Grade Center by a specific category to compare how all students scored in the “Homework” category for example.  Categories may also be used when creating Smart Views (a saved view of Grade Center data).  Using categories can also be beneficial when implementing Weighted Grading or creating Reports.  Blackboard automatically creates categories for Assignment, Discussion, Survey and Test.  This section outlines the steps for creating, modifying, and removing categories.

Creating Categories

  1. Click the Control Panel button on the left side of the screen in your Course homepage.

  2. Under Assessment, click Grade Center.
    Click Gradecenter
  3. Click Manage from the Action Bar of the Grade Center.

  4. Click Categories from the Manage dropdown listing.

  5. Click the Add Category button to create a new category.

  6. Enter in the Category Name (required) and the Description (optional).

  7. To complete the process, click the Submit button.

    Note: A Success message and the new category appear.
  8. To return to the main Grade Center area, click the OK button.

Modifying Categories

  1. Click the Control Panel button on the left side of the screen in your Course homepage.

  2. Under Assessment, click Grade Center.

  3. Click Manage from the Action Bar of the Grade Center.

  4. Click Categories from the Manage dropdown listing.

  5. Find the category to change and click the Modify button.

  6. Modify the Name and Description as needed.

  7. Click the Submit button to save the changes.

    Note: A Success message and the updated category are displayed.
  8. To return to the main Grade Center area, click the OK button.

Removing Categories

  1. Click the Control Panel button on the left side of the screen in your Course homepage.

  2. Under Assessment, click Grade Center.

  3. Click Manage from the Action Bar of the Grade Center.

  4. Click Categories from the Manage dropdown listing.

  5. Find the category to delete and click the Remove button.

    Note:
    A Remove button will only appear for categories that can be removed from the Grade Center.
  6. Click OK at the pop-up message to confirm the deletion.

    Note: A Success message is displayed and the category has been removed.
  7. To return to the main Grade Center area, click the OK button.
