Blackboard Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Grade Center, Testing Services

How do I upload test results from Testing Services into the Blackboard Grade Center?

There are 4 primary steps to the process:

  1. Create a column in Blackboard
  2. Download the Grade Center as an Excel File
  3. Copy/Paste the Scores fom the Testing Services Report into the Grade Center Excel File
  4. Upload the Grades Back to Blackboard

Step 1: Create a column in Blackboard

  1. In the Grade Center, click the Create Column button (in the gray toolbar, to the left)
  2. Type the Column Name in the textbox (such as Exam 1)
  3. Type the Points Possible in the textbox
  4. All other settings on this page are optional. You can skip them for now and click the Submit button

You now have a column for the scores. You can learn more about setting up columns here

Step 2: Download the Grade Center as an Excel File

  1. In the Grade Center, click Work Offline (in the gray toolbar, to the far right)
  2. In the drop down menu, click Download
  3. You can modify these settings, but you do not need to for this operation. Leave the settings as-is and click the Submit button
  4. On the next page, click Download and save the file. DO NOT change the file name, or Blackboard will not be able to process the file when you upload it

You now have an Excel file on your computer with a copy of the Grade Center.

Step 3: Copy/Paste the Scores from the Testing Services Report into the Grade Center Excel File

  1. Open both Excel files
  2. It is easiest to place them side-by-side at first. To do this, click the View ribbon, then click Arrange All. In the pop-up box, select Vertical and  then the OK button
  3. Verify that both files are in alphabetical order by last name. Scroll through the names to find any students who are missing from the Testing Services Report or who have the incorrect name in the Testing Services Report (this report contains the names as the students entered them on the scantron, and is not verified against the official course roster). You may want to enter rows for students who are not included in the Testing Services report and assign them a score of 0
  4. Select the column for the test in the Testing Services report. Copy the column using Ctrl+C on the keyboard, right clicking and choosing Copy from the menu, or using the Copy icon on the Home ribbon
  5. Select the column in the Grade Center Excel file. Paste the scores into this file using Ctrl+V on the keyboard, right clicking and choosing Paste from the menu, or using the Paste icon on the Home ribbon
  6. Verify that the scores are assigned to the correct students in the Grade Center Excel file (I like to spot-check that the first and last students have the correct grades, at least)
  7. Save the Excel file (simply clicking Save should be sufficient, but if you get an error when uploading, use Save As and select either Tab Delimited or CSV as the file type)

Now the grades are saved in the Grade Center Excel file and are ready to be uploaded into Blackboard.

Step 4: Upload the Grades Back to Blackboard

  1. In the Grade Center, click Work Offline (in the gray toolbar to the far right)
  2. In the drop down menu, click Upload
  3. Click the Browse My Computer button and select the Excel file that contains the Grade Center scores
  4. Leave the Delimiter Type set to Auto. (If you get an error in the upload process, re-save the Excel file as either Tab Delimited or CSV and select the corresponding option here)
  5. Click the Submit button
  6. Review the Data Preview report to make sure that the data is being imported to the correct column
  7. Click the Submit button

Now the grades should be uploaded and saved in the Grade Center. Students will be able to view the grades in My Grades.
