Blackboard Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Course, Renaming

Can I rename my old courses to avoid confusing them with active courses?

Inactive courses can be renamed but course IDs cannot be changed. Since courses are listed alphabetically, renaming old courses by placing X, Y or Z in front of the title moves them to the bottom of the list and out of the way. To rename a course:

  1. Enter the course
  2. In the Control Panel, click Customization
  3. Click Properties
  4. Edit the Course Name and click the Submit button

Note: Names of active courses are controlled by the information in the Registration and Records catalogue; changes to active course names will be standardized twice daily when the request server runs.

Is there a way to rename my courses?

The title of currently-used courses is controlled by the Blackboard system; twice daily the server matches the course to the Registration and Records database, which will change the name back to the originally assigned title. Older courses, however, can be renamed to avoid confusion. Since Blackboard lists courses alphabetically, putting letters, as zzz or yyy, in front of the title will force the courses to bottom of the list.

To rename a course:

  1. Enter the course
  2. In the Control Panel, click Customization
  3. Click Properties
  4. Edit the Course Name and click the Submit button

Our department is changing the title of my course. Can I edit the name listed in Blackboard?

Course names in Blackboard will reflect the title listed with Registration and Records, therefore, faculty cannot change their active Blackboard course titles. Once the semester is finished, course titles can be changed. Changing course titles is a good strategy to help distinguish old courses from current courses.
