Drawing

drawing-dog

Drawing is a visual tool for expression, description and communication – whether on paper or virtual modes of representation. Our drawing program at NIU will help you build on your drawing skills starting with object representation to interpretation to conception. Through intensive studio practice, you will develop portfolio pieces that explore concepts of narrative image, abstraction, socio-political engagement, globalism and deconstructing identity. Our drawing program fosters contemporary approaches by incorporating new technologies with traditional approaches to materials and methods. We encourage you to expand your methodologies to drawing to include performance, installation, video, animation and photography.

As a student in the drawing program, the drawing faculty will encourage and support you to expand your knowledge of materials, processes and historical precedents.

Visiting Artist and Scholar Program

An active visiting artist and scholar program enhances our drawing program at the School of Art and Design. We have hosted lectures and workshops by talented artists including Robbie Conal, Linda Weintraub, Enrique Chagoya, Jin Soo Kim, Justice Albie Sachs, Flo Oy Wong, Roger Shimomura, Linda Kallan, Duat Vu and Susan Cheal.
