 DRAWING FOUNDATIONS 2

Course Description from Undergraduate Catalog: Further exploration of basic drawing media, with an emphasis on work in color. Development of skill in the representation and interpretation of various subjects. Prerequisite: Art 100. 

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course all students should be able to:

bullet

Define and effectively manipulate hue, temperature, value, and intensity;

bullet

Define and effectively use four types of color harmony plus disharmony;

bullet

Demonstrate substantial skills with dry or oil pastels plus prismacolor pencils;

bullet

Demonstrate understanding of the spatial and expressive implications of color;

bullet

Design and complete an extended narrative project

bullet

Expand critiquing skills, using at least four different critique strategies.

Final portfolio will include at least 10 pieces, such as:
2 18x24' value studies, exploring composition and lighting
4 18x24" color studies, exploring variations in hue, temperature, value, intensity
2 Self-portrait drawings                  
2-part Clue Diptych or other narrative project

TYPICAL COURSE STRUCTURE 

 

SECTION 1: COMPOSITION AND VALUE

Weeks 1 and 2: Compositional Basics:
Gesture and value studies exploring balance, emphasis, focal point, contrast, and negation of edge. Review of perspective, as needed.

Weeks 3: Reductive Value: Using black Nupastel or charcoal, explore back, side, and key lighting, plus negation of edge.

Week 4: Reductive Monochromatic Study: Reductive single-color drawing expanding understanding of value and exploring use of expressive color keys.

SECTION 2: COLOR CHARACTERISTICS

Week 5: Analogous Color and Complementary Color:
Reductive/constructive drawings exploring color harmonies.

Week 6: Spatial Color: Temperature: Exploring spatial effects of color using various warm and cool combinations.

Week 7: Spatial Color: Intensity: Use of intensity to strengthen depiction of form & space.

Week 8: Color and Light: Full color drawing.   
                             
Midterm Portfolio

 

SECTION 3: COLOR AND EXPRESSION

Week 9: Analogous and Complementary Studies of Head.
Emphasis on planar analysis and use of intensity and value to create the illusion of space.

Week 10: Disharmonious Color. Using unconventional colors for expressive purposes. 

Weeks 11 and 12: Self Portrait.

SECTION 4: EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT

Weeks 13, 14, 15: Clue Diptych (
Two-part narrative, using visual clues to show conditions before and after an event) or other narrative project.       

EXAM WEEK: final Portfolio
