2D FOUNDATIONS

Course Description: Comprehensive study of design elements and principles through the study of two-dimensional space. Emphasis on inventiveness in the use of various media. Studio and lecture. 

Course Objectives: Upon course completion, all students should be able to:

bullet

Define and effectively manipulate the elements and principles of two-dimensional design in order to create non-objective, abstract, and representational compositions;

bullet

Use basic Photoshop to create photo-based collages;

bullet

Develop inventive concepts using various problem-solving strategies, such as convergent thinking, divergent thinking, metaphor, and collaboration

bullet

Speak and write critically about personal and peer artworks and propose alternatives.

bullet

Research an idea and develop an extended series of sequential images.

Final portfolio: at least 12 pieces, demonstrating understanding of elements and principles of design, work with abstraction, Photoshop skills and exploration of multiple image structures.

TYPICAL COURSE STRUCTURE 
 

SECTION 1: BASIC ELEMENTS

Week 1: Line
Assignments: Line Inventory; Line Dynamics; 4 Lines/4 Times; Written Biographical Statement.  

Week 2: Shape
Assignments: Shape Inventory; start Object Lesson Assignment                

Week 3 and 4:Texture and Value
Assignment: Object Lesson Assignment     

Review #1


SECTION 2: DEGREES OF REPRESENTATION

Week 5: Abstraction and Organization
Assignment: Architectural Abstraction: balance, emphasis, contrast, continuity, density

Written assignment: Cause and Effect critique

Weeks 6 and 7: Simplicity and Complexity
Assignments: Labyrinth Collage #1 and #2, exploring illusion of space and movement.
Written assignment: Turn Up the Heat critique.     


Weeks 8 and 9:
Labyrinth book.

: CAPSTONE: Student develops and completes an ambitious self-assignment, which serves as the final exam for the course.
