Jerry D. Meyer

Currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Art.  He was regular faculty member at NIU from the fall of 1968 until the summer of 2001, when he retired.  During that time, in addition to regular duties as Professor of Art History, he served as Assistant Chair of the School of Art and intermittent Acting and Interim Chair from 1986 until his retirement.   He came to DeKalb from New York City where he worked at Brooklyn College and completed coursework for the Ph.D. in art history at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.  The doctorate was awarded in 1973, with a specialization in the modern period of European and American art.  The dissertation topic was the religious paintings of Benjamin West and the dissertation director was Robert Rosenblum.

Professor Meyer has published numerous articles, book reviews, and exhibition catalog essays.  Journals where his articles have appeared include the Art Bulletin, the Burlington Magazine, the American Art Journal, Studies in Iconography, Stained Glass, and Journal of the American Academy of Religion.  He has also presented papers at numerous professional conferences.  He is currently researching and writing a lengthy manuscript focused on the uses of religious images and references in 20th century art.
