| Visual Communication
The Visual Communication area of study, currently the largest program specialization in the School of Art, provides an edu-cation that leads to employment in a variety of fields, including publication design, corporate identity, display design, and package design. Instruction in visual communication stresses an orderly and systematic approach to solving design problems. Students gain a solid grounding in typography by examining the technical, aesthetic, and functional requirements of type. They also master the intricacies of preparing communications for printing and publication. Professionals from the Chicago area, a principal publishing center, frequently evaluate student work, helping prepare majors for the practice of graphic design. Instruction in visual communication is supported by studio and laboratory spaces on the third floor of Arends Hall. A Macintosh computer lab equipped to meet the specific needs of the visual communication curriculum is an essential program resource, providing opportunities for majors to learn desktop publishing as well as other aspects of computer-aided publication design.
