REAL is a federally funded partnership between Northern Illinois University,
Rock Valley College and the Rockford Public Schools. Through this
program, the Art Education department at Northern Illinois University
has paired up with Jefferson High School in Rockford, Illinois to
provide pre-service teachers in the art education program with clinical
observation hours and teaching experience. For Jefferson High School,
Project REAL is a way to promote teaching as a profession to its students
and to bring in new and alternative perspectives from the NIU pre-service
art teachers. For NIU Art Education students, the program provides
a unique opportunity to gain valuable insight into the art department,
administration and inner-workings of contemporary high school culture.
