Ceramics
The Ceramics area of study encourages the understanding and development of the creative thought process through extensive experimentation with all aspects of the ceramic medium. Classes cover the aesthetics of form, space, and surface, incorporating demonstrations in throwing and hand-building techniques, mold making and slip casting, firing, and traditional glazing as well as other alternative surface treatments.
A ceramic student organization provides opportunities for students to experiment with marketing their work, organizing field trips, and bringing in visiting artists. The ceramics facilities, located on the first floor of Arends Hall, include a large under-graduate studio complete with electric wheels, work tables, extruders, and glaze areas. A large kiln room contains both gas and electric kilns. There is an outside kiln area for raku, salt, and alternative firing techniques.
Additional facilities for advanced and graduate students are located at the Pleasant Street Studios.
