About the NIU Annuitants Association
Membership in the Northern Illinois University Annuitants Association (NIUAA) is open to:
- current academic and civil service employees
- retirees
- retiree spouses
- survivors of retirees from NIU
Regularly, there are media reports of another pension system in default and/or retiree health plans diminished or eliminated. Here in Illinois, the State University Retirement System (SURS) has been under-funded by billions of dollars by the state legislature even though they are legally required to maintain a certain level.
NIU annuitants and current employees (perhaps the group most vulnerable to future cuts), have responded to these actions. In 1999 our membership stood at 471; it is now more than 1,800. At a recent meeting of the State University Annuitants Association (SUAA), NIUAA received the award for the chapter with the largest gain in number of members. There are 23 chapters.
Numbers do count very much in lobbying to maintain our benefits. NIUAA’s membership still stands at 52% of its potential. Click on Membership at left for information on how to join NIUAA. Annual dues are only $28.
The influence of organizations is determined by the size of the membership and the actions of those members. The association needs members and the retirees need the efforts of the association. The NIUAA invites all retirees and current employees and their spouses and survivors to join us.
