Spectacular Spain – Valencia and Barcelona
March 8 to 17, 2012

Spain This trip will highlight the beauty, culture, art, and excitement of Spain's Mediterranean Coast. Valencia offers medieval cathedrals, defensive fortifications, the chalice claimed to be the Holy Grail, and of course, the City of Arts and Sciences, a true cultural complex which has quickly become the city's premier tourist attraction. We'll travel north of Valencia to Sagunto to see its rich Roman heritage, ancient stone theatre, medieval castle, and the ruins of 13th-century El Salvador Church. An optional excursion will take us to Requena, home of local wine production and cava (Spanish champagne). Touring highlights in Barcelona include the Gothic Quarter, Spanish Village, Royal Palace, Basilica of Santa Maria de Mar, Ciutadella Park, Olympic Village, and the distinctive works of Antoni Gaudi, which include the Casa Mila and the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. We also allow for free time in each city.

Valencia and Barcelona are two amazing Mediterranean cities that enjoy a mild temperate climate, a wealth of gastronomical delights, unique architecture, historical significance, colorful festivals, and fascinating artistic events. Spain is a colorful pageantry of art, history and customs, set against a backdrop that spans sunny Mediterranean shores and grand mountain ranges, dotted with groves of oranges and olives. We'll explore the best of both cities and see where historical traditions and recent, innovative architecture stand side by side.
