Advocacy Program

Northern Illinois University facilitates a growing network called NIU Alumni Connections that enlists alumni, faculty, students, and friends to serve as vocal advocates for NIU to ensure support from the state and federal government. With ongoing support from elected officials, community leaders and the public, NIU continues to be a comprehensive teaching and research institution with a diverse and international student body in one of the most dynamic regions in the country.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As an individual, your voice can influence decisions being made by legislators and other policy-making bodies. Once you join NIU Alumni Connections, you and other network members will be armed with the latest facts, figures, and news you'll need to be effective advocates. You also will be notified of the University's key legislative priorities and asked to communicate with your elected officials at strategic times throughout the year.

Our software will identify your district's legislators when you log in and you'll be provided a sample letter. The process of communicating takes only a few minutes but will have an impact on a legislator's decisions.

If you want to get more you involved, you can:
•  Send a personal note to your legislators
•  Travel to Springfield with us in the Spring
•  Attend a local meeting with your legislators
•  Write a letter to the editor of your local paper
•  Speak about NIU at your organization
•  Notify us if you know your legislators personally

WHO CAN JOIN
Whether you're one of more than 225,000 alumni, a student or a faculty member, you can persuasively tell your personal NIU story. In addition, parents, community leaders, business organizations, and other friends are encouraged to participate. The more people who speak with one voice, the more effective the program can be.

Become part of NIU Alumni Connections. It's free to join and only takes a few minutes. Call Katie Wernberg, Assistant Director of Advocacy and Chicago Operations at 815-753-5088 or email at kwernberg@niu.edu.
