Students are admitted to the university and the professional phase of the program by two distinct processes. Only students who are admitted to the university may be admitted into the program. Admission to the university is managed by the NIU Office of Admissions for U.S. citizens or International Programs and Services for non-U.S citizens with foreign transcripts. Admission into the professional phase of the CLS program is limited and competitive. Applications are available November 1 and must be turned into the office by March 1 for admission to the class for the following fall semester. Applicants must be admitted to the university and must submit all college grade transcripts, a completed application form, a signed copy of the program’s essential functions, and two letters of recommendation to the CLS program office by the published due date(s). Criteria for admission include completion or near completion of core competency, general education, and prerequisite courses, and cumulative and prerequisite course grade point averages of 2.5/4.0. To be eligible for completion of a B.S. degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS), the student must have earned an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S., and be certified as a CLT/MLT. The student must be admitted to Northern Illinois University (NIU) and complete general education and prerequisite courses (if an A.A.S. candidate).
